I had a 4, now have a 4s and an iPad 2 and automatic iCloud backups do not happen when my screen is locked, phone charged and on my wifi network. It works manually and my automatic wifi sync does work as well. I even disabled the WiFi iTunes Sync to see if that was causing a conflict, but it didn't help.

How do you know it does not work?

Have you left your devices plugged in and connected to WiFi ALL night and checked the last date of the back up? It may not do it the second you do this and might wait till the server is less busy later in the night or even early morning.

Mine is working great. Everything on my iPhone 4S migrated over to my iPad 3G. It is a great feature.

Yes, all night and still no iCloud backup. The restore feature is great, went from my 4 to 4s in 15 minutes wire free. I just hate to have to manually back it up constantly.

All,

I believe I have fixed the issue by deleting my iCloud profile on my iPhone and re-creating the iCloud profile. My phone then synched automatically when I charged my phone and on my wifi network the next time i charged it.

Mine has the same issue, left the iPhone connected to the charger lastnight, on WiFi, and no auto backup. I'm going to try and delete the iCloud profile when I get home and see if that works.

I'm wondering if it only does a backup if it detects changes.

My friend who was having the same problem with his 3GS reported this fix helped him as well. Let's see in 2-3 days if it works though ;)

I'll be trying it when I get home. I'll have to check my Wife's iPhone 4S as well.

Sorry to hear that. I confirmed my fix definitely has worked for me and my friend. Every day now my phone is backing up to the iCloud automatically.
