Hey,

i've done some quick searching and looking through AT&T's website but havent been able to find anything for Canada. Am i not able to get the iPhone because i live in Canada? All i see on the AT&T website is something like if you live in the U.S. but visit Canada and make a call from there, you can pay something like 59 cents per call you make.

Is it available in Canada? If so, what do I have to do differently? Some type of special plan?

Thanks,
Matt

No I dont think you can, I am guessing iPhone for Canada and Europe will come out same time Leopard does, October sometime.

Anyone know if you get the iPhone now in the states and spend a few months in canada or europe, would you be able to change carriers in those countries? I travel a bit and am always switching SIM cards in and out.

Believe me, I have looked at every which way I could get my hands on one in Canada and it would be such a pain in the rear it's not worth the extra money just to get it in the first couple of weeks.

Getting a US CC is a pain, the rates after roaming charges and such would be just as expensive as a Canadian plan. Unlocking it and putting in a Roger's SIM by info provided by Apple indicate the phone won't work either. Apple has done a great job protecting AT&T's investment in this as they will likely do to the Canadian carrier as well. Personally I have no problems paying the price for the phone and I'm generally an early adopter but it is not worth going through all that trouble when it will likely be released in Aug/Sept here anyway.

It was a hard decision to make because I've been holding off upgrading my phone since I've seen iPhone but alas I will be watching my American friends play with their new toy with great envy.

I am hoping though that Apple paves the way for some much needed reforms in Canada when it comes to Canadians paying way to much for cell phone minutes and data minutes. With our dollar nearly par now it is almost cheaper for me to go through an American plan. The CRTC has much to do with the delay of this launch, believe you me. They are the reason we can't get movies or TV shows through iTunes in Canada. They may lose control over the "cultrual content" the government deems "acceptable". What a farce! The paranoid companies here are blocking all attempts for new companies to get into the market and hurt their ridiculous profits made from us complacent and quiet canadians.

We are small potatoes in the grand scheme of things unfortunately. Hurry up Apple! I hope your product is revolutionary on many different fronts!

Nobody currently knows and we won't know until after the phone is released and someone tries it. Even then, if it would work you won't get visual voicemail and maybe some other features just won't work.

Only time will tell.

The iPhone won't be available until Canada until Rogers offers a reasonably priced unlimited data plan. As they seem determined to screw everyone over on data plans (ie. 200MB Blackberry plan for $100) I doubt that will be any time soon. Apple wants to ensure everyone can get the full iPhone multimedia experience and not go flat broke, Rogers wants to make big cash, to say these goals conflict would be an understatement.

I have to say that its rather disappointing Canada is that much behind in so many things. i.e. The data plans through Rogers or Bell cost an arm and a leg. iTunes Canada has yet to get any TV shows or movies, Canadian TV is trying too hard to "protect" itself. I am sure many would love to have Royal Canadian Air Farce on itunes.... but nonetheless....

If I can acquire one, I'll definitely post my experiences. I do know that the AT&T roaming fees will kill me. I may get away with using the data part in a very miserly fashion. That may hold me off till iPhone comes to Canada.

Are you guys located in Toronto?

I usually put in a Fido prepaid SIM card when I am in Toronto. I definitely would not use AT&T roaming... I have AT&T right now, made that mistake once and my cellular bill doubled. I have a nagging feeling that the iPhone will be coming by year's end.

I just hope it comes soon... as long as it comes. I will be located in Cambridge Ontario (near Waterloo) when i purchase one. I hope i will be able to get service there.

this is ridiculous. i heard when the iphone comes to canada, it will be ridiculously expensive.. costing up to a thousand dollars for just the phone.

Spear a though

All you that live in Canada should feel lucky, you will get your iphone this year (probable) but here in Australia it could be years until we see the release of the iphone. What makes it worse is all we hear about in every news site, blog and podcast is the iphone and we can't even see one in really life!!! So when you complain in North America spear a though for Mac enthusiast in Australia that don't have the iphone or tv show content from itunes.

well

i paid 129 on a three year plan with rogers for a razr v3i...
sister paid 149 on three year plan with rogers for a v3 in hot pink

the free phones dont even have cameras on three year plans...
the kzr is 229.99 on a three year plan..

phones are expenisve here

Well there is no way it would be 1000 dollars (maybe with the taxes Canadians pay). But considering the exchange rate right now, at MAX i think the 8G should only go up to 649$ canadian. If this is the case, I would suggest those that live by the border to get one in the states.

That's only because Rogers and Bell have a monoploy in Canada. I really think its ridiculous that majority of the plans through them now are 3 years instead of the American 2 years. I still remember the days when it was 2 years and evenings and weekends started at 6pm.

I was able to buy an iPhone from eBay for use in Canada. Let me assure you that the iPhone will not work in Canada, well, at least fully. You will not be able to activate it with AT&T if you do not have an American SSN, and a credit card with a US address. Therefore, you've just bought yourself a big paper weight. However, if you want to use the iPhone as an iPod without voice/data features, you can go ahead and get one. To do this, you'll need to download iTunes 7.3.0.54, and use an hex editor to modify it in a few places. You'll also need DVD Jon's Phone Activation Server. Once you do that, you'll be able to use the iPhone with iTunes and Wifi. But nothing else. You'll need Windows or Parallels to do this crack.

I've placed numerous calls with AT&T to see if they would simply activate a data plan for me, but again, unless you've got a SSN and US address, they won't help you.

Now, if you were to drive across the border, and go to an AT&T store in person, they may be able to help you. I haven't driven 8 hours just for this yet, but may do so in the future.

Questions are welcome.

You should be able to activate your iPhone on one of those prepaid plans without a SSN # or US address - it has been documented here many times. It is more expensive though.

Why would it take you 8 hours to get to an AT&T store? The closest to your location is in Buffalo 1.5 hours away.

I was told by AT&T that their prepaid plan does not roam. Can anyone confirm or deny this?

You're right, Buffalo or Niagara Falls US won't be that far. I don't know what I was thinking. I have next weekend off, so may make the trek then.

I'm not sure if you can roam with a prepaid iPhone plan. IMO you should be able to roam as you would be paying up front.

The pricing for roaming from AT&T could be less expensive than using Canadian carriers since we are being gouged by Rogers / Bell / Telus for data. Either way let us know what you find out. I am sure there a lot of Canadians waiting to buy the iPhone (inluding myself).

The GoPhone (prepaid option) plans do not roam. This is a fact, unfortunately.
