Avatars not loading

In the settings my avatar is sometimes there and sometimes it’s not.

In messages the contacts avatars take a while to load.

This is on an iPhone 6. Is this normal?

It should be there all the time and load almost instantly, but it could be that it's disappear is caused by a slow internet connection or a slow connection to the iCloud servers.

It shows my initials for a second then the blank head avatar then after a while if at all my actual avatar. Looks fine on my iPad.
