I JUST got my iMac (first mac ever).. and was wondering what program I can use to view these files. Should it be quicktime? Do I need to upgrade to quicktime pro? I installed Media player for mac, but that program didn't seem to work either. Any help would be GREATLY appreciated.. THANKS in advance!

QT opens avi my camera takes, although some avi's may not be supported.

get VLC. that will play just about anything...

Thanks for your replies guys

After I put this post up, it seems as if VLC is really popular. Is VLC freeware? or is it another purchase?

Thanks again, this MAC forum rox

Yes, it's freeware and open source.
The Mac OS X download page is here.

Thanks again. This is soooo helpful.. This is sweet. If it makes a difference, I got the iMac 20' and upgraded it with an extra 512... got the wireless keyboard, which is ALSO cool. Waited on the 2-button wireless mouse because I saw somewhere on this forum that it was due out soon. But ABSOLUTELY LOVE the MAC so far... I also wanted to pick up that book, the missing manuals, but they were out :-(

you can also install the DivX codec so you can play most .avi's in QuickTime. i recently did that, just google DivX Mac and it should come up with the site. i used to just use VLC... but it's good to be able to view .avi's in QT.

Thanks for the DIVX tip also..

I'm at work now, and I've been hopping on these websites on/off. I'm familiar with DivX on my PC... so then.. in conclusion...

My options are : VLC, MPLAYER, and DIVX...
Would it hurt to install all three of them? I'm the type of guy that likes to be able to play any type of file I may come across... what do you guys think?

Install as many as you want. The combination of the 3ivX and DivX QuickTime codecs plays the video and sound of just about every modern .avi file. VLC and Mplayer are still in development. They work well, but they also have occasional glitches. The most noticeable is that VLC's audio tends be a bit "tinny" in alternate releases. But for viewing porn, it is acceptable.

What else would one use VLC FOR?!

I went home last night and JUST installed the DIVX codec. Restarted my mackie.. and VOILA!! Porn galore.. err.. avis and mpegs :p.
I played it with QUicktime, and it worked great. No problems what so ever..
I guess I'm going to push my luck and verify that, in order for QT to play in full screen, I have to buy the PRO version? I JUST bought the iMAC at the store.. and was suprised that it doesn't COME with Pro (or does it?)
THANKS!! YOU GUYS ROCK.

QT Pro is extra and you need it to play full screen...

but i think VLC supports full screen playback...
