avi encoding

i am trying to burn a avi file so i can play it in my dvd player tried doing it in toast 6.0 takes 6 hours using my 1ghz ti and at the end it comes up with a error could not record disc because of mac os error

ok i thought i will try ffmpegx and this thing takes 5hrs then creates 1 folder with a audio and video ts and 2 vlc files which are blank when i try to view them arrrggghhhh

isnt there a simple program that will quickly convert a standard quicktime avi file to dvd

plenty softwares on the pc like my mates keep telling i cant find any for the mac !!!

and why does roxio take a blank disc in when encoding spinning it for 6 hrs wearing out my babys dvd drive :mad:
 
toast titanium will do it if its a file quicktime'll read. i tried it with some divx avi's too and it worked but video only, no audio. a little finicky i guess
 
I use ffmpegx, and it works pretty well actually. Perhaps try encoding from avi to dv, then putting it together in imovie, then burning in idvd. It should create 1 dv file from 1 avi file.

I've done this for the second season of Arrested Development (18 avi files) and it's worked just fine for me.

thanks guys i think i only have the idvd option lets hope apple doesnt let me down can anyone put a idiots guide of how to acheive what i want !!
 
Anything I can play in QuickTime will burn to DVD using Toast Titanium. As long as the codecs are installed you can burn it. IMHO this is the nicest option for doing this on OS X.

As for it taking a long time what did you expect? If you want this to work quickly you really need a G5.

The only problem I've had is you can only fit about 2 hours worth of avi footage into a DVD but it's all good. I'm burning the whole thundercats series on DVD as we speak :)

I think if you use File -> Save as Disc Image it doesn't require you to put in the blank. Then just burn the image file when it is done.
 
Just a thought:

Burn .avi in toast ( iso9660 to CDr. )

Buy a divx player. (<- click for example)

Benefits:
1. Picture quality looks quite good.
2. Zero encoding time.
3. CDr's are cheaper than DVDr's.

yeah been thinking that :)

would save me a lot of trouble might just do that but my dvd player is realy good oh well divx might be the way !!!

also tried updateing toast to 6.1.1 but my serial wont work and it doesnt accept any of my friends ones so i had to go back to 6 although i did update quicktime to 6.5 pro this hopefully will have the right codecs

any more ideas guys !!! :eek:
 
As far as I know, the necessary QuickTime codec to play .avi files under Tiger has not yet been released. Try previewing an avi file in the Finder's column view mode and see what happens.

And if the codec is not on your Mac, then I think Toast cannot convert it to any other format.

Basically, until this codec is out your are SOL mate.

The DivX QuickTime codec has been out for quite a while.
 
just to clear up

yeah i can view the file in quicktime and vlc but funnily enough before toast starts encoding quicktime wants to update ????
 
I use toast to burn avi to dvds all the time. I have to do it on my eMac g4 rather than my iMac g5 because the g4 is the one with the superdrive.

It does take a long time as I would expect. Problem is that even videos that look very good on the computer usually end up looking like crap on the television. Is there any way to avoid this- like instead of using toast using ffmpeg? Because on ffmpeg there are much more specific options I can use, would anything help it look better? I usually only have to put 40-50 minutes of video on a dvd.
 
AVI problem

I recently baught a new Casio Camera, its great but the only problem with it is that the movies wouldnt play. I not too technically minded but i do know that its some kind of encoding problem witht eh avi file type.

Any advice?

try using vlc to play the resultant file on ur mac does the vıdeo play using ur camera if not u may have a problem with ur camrea !

yes, you need to go to the casio website/download/camera ... and download the avi-importer from there, folow the instructions, then you can watch the avi movies in the qt.
