I noticed that in the contact settings you can add your friend's b-day. This is great for me because I can't remember my own brother's b-day. However, I see no alarm, and it doesn't add the b-day to the calendar...

I want to know if it is possible to have alarms for your friend's b-days. This would be excellent for the iPhone! Right now I think Google Calendar would be the best, but iCal is an option. I would like everything synced to my phone!

How do you guys do this? Manually in iCal?

I didn't know there was a section for b-days until recently. I added mine in via iCal. I wonder why Address Book doesn't show the extra fields.

This is actually straight forward and should stick and sync with iCal too.
I had some problems with syncing with ical in the beginning and I did a restore
from iTunes and that fixed it and some other things too like the volume settings.
Try that and see if it works.

I think what you need to do is actually "enable" the Birthday Calendar in iCal. It will pull the data from your address book. Then, when you sync your iPhone and it syncs with the address book and iCal, it should pull over into your calendar.

Not sure about notification alarms though...

Not sure if it matters, but I dont think iCal allows for automatic birthday reminders for some reason - this would most likely carry over to the iPhone

I began putting alarms on birthdays when I started using Entourage when I bought my first Mac. It's a lifesaver.

However, last night at midnight I had an alert for a birthday upcoming. Nothing like a little beep in the night to wake you up!

BTW I sync Entourage with iCal, so I get two messages for each birthday! :p

the easiest way to solve this is to use a program called menucalendarclock. That program allows you to insert address book birthdays AND insert alerts for them! The program itself is pretty neat as well.
