Is the 3 finger swipe for Back/Forward gone? Apple changed this action to 2 finger for Safari, but totally left it out for all the other apps and Finder. Is anybody else bothered by this?

This is huge step backward for Lion because this gesture was system-wide for all apps including Finder. Now to do Back/Forward, you've got to use the old keyboard shortcut cmd+[ or ]. And by the way, how did Apple think of this key combination in the first place. Doesn't it make more sense to use cmd+left or right arrow?

I use cmd+arrow keys to switch spaces now. In lion that won't be needed because of the gestures, but it really sucks that Apple took out the system wide 3-finger gesture to go back in pages.
such a shame.

System Preferences/Trackpad/More Gestures/Drop Down menu.

;)

i used to be able to go back/forward on safari by using only 2 finger swipes. now that doesn't work?? what do i need to do to fix this??

The update to DP4 released the other day has broken the swipe in parts it seems. I find some Safari pages where it refuses to go backwards or forward, but reload the same page in a different tab and it works. So, bugged indeed.
And it's gone in Finder, not sure if that's a bug or not.

Where? Are you talking about the option for "Swipe between pages"? As far as I know that only works for Safari. For Snow Leopard this gesture was OS-wide for every app, including Finder, Firefox, iTunes, App Store, etc.

Sorry, but I tried that and it worked for me.

Maybe it's now working with lion?

Well this actually worked! It's just that swiping between pages (I believe it's OS-wide; tried in finder, iTunes and safari so far) is now three fingers (just like in snow leopard, as plain and ugly, without the cool page-over-page animation and the gray woven matte background that should appear if ever not able to go forward or backward) and thus changing the gesture for moving between full screen apps (like between safari and photobooth) into four finger swipe... quite a habit change to do! But if this is apple's intention, why would they leave the two finger setting somehow, in parts, still working?
Lion is still buggy it seems. :(

Well hello, it's a beta.

Well I mean for being released in July. That's not a very long time, even if the release will be in late July. What i mean is that the bugs/bugginess seem to suggest that July isn't the right time to release it. Well, I have trust in Apple. Or at least hope! :D

From what I'm reading here it sounds like Apple totally screwed up. On Snow Leopard I LOVE the gestures, and how it's the same system-wide. It annoys me when I come across something that doesn't take advantage of the 3 finger swipe (for example, the pop-out grid from the dock while inside of a folder that's in a folder. Did that make sense?) If there's going to be separate gestures for Safari, this sounds real sucky. I don't want to do a 2 finger swipe in Safari then 3 finger swipe everywhere else. How does that make sense?

If I'm not understanding something correctly, feel free to correct me. I'm not using Lion beta so I don't know exactly how things are working.

A bit of a bump, but hey I managed to find this post while looking for help, means others might too.

As of the GM version, by default you seem to be able to only swipe with 2 fingers with safari and preview. Strangely enough Finder doesn't work with it.
You can fix this if you like by going into system preferences/Trackpad/More Gestures/Swipe between pages and changing it to 3 fingers - that'll get you back to Snow Leopard-style back/forward.

I know a few people who use 3 finger drag and I do as well, and as of right now we're kinda screwed. What I used to do is 3 finger drag and use BetterTouchTool to configure 4 fingers to swipe back/forward, but since thats now swipe between spaces...

At this point there may be too many gestures, gotta give something up. It is still possible with: 3 finger drag, 4 finger back/forward and 5 finger swipe spaces, but man...its a little much.

How about:
  • 1 finger double-tap & drag
  • 2 finger scroll
  • 3 finger back/forward
  • 4 finger switch between spaces

This is all kinds of screwed up for me, if i choose the first option Safari works with two fingers and firefox with three but going up/down crashes firefox, iTunes does nothing. If i choose the other options iTunes works Safari doesn't and any other program crashes.

Yep, you can't use three fingers for up/down gestures in any app. Even though it is not assigned to Mission Control. Can't believe Apple missed this bug.

Go to Trackpad in System Preferences, More Gestures tab, and change "Swipe Between Pages" to "Swipe with Two or Three fingers". This will also allow you to swipe back/forward in Firefox, the Finder, iPhoto and other apps again with a three finger swipe. I think Swipe Between Full Screen Apps will automatically change to a four finger swipe when you do this. If not, change it manually.

You can go back/forward with a Magic Mouse using option + 2 finger swipe left/right

Olá vizinho

Sorry, that was meant for Finder, at least in the GM it worked. Maybe it was cmd or ctrl can't remember right now

Viva!

I'm running the GM, and I've tried all variations on that, simply nothing will work - in Finder and iTunes nothing will work for the back shortcut, except for clicking the actual button.

Just for the record, in Mouse>More Gestures, "Swipe between pages" is set to "Scroll left of right with one finger".

I miss the ability to swipe left/right to go back/forward in Finder. I hope this gets added back in, it's annoying to have to click the button when the gesture worked in Snow Leopard.

To quote my earlier post in this thread:

To enable back/forward gesture in Safari & Finder, without loosing the new animated back/forward two finger swipe in safari, do the following:

A. System Preferences -> Trackpad -> More Gestures (Tab)

B. Change the, 'Swipe Between Pages', Drop-Down Menu selection.

C. From the default, 'Swipe Left or Right with Two Fingers, to 'Swipe with Two or Three Fingers'.

This worked for me. :)

Edit: Opps! Sorry, didn't realize HelveticaNeue already answered the question. Anyway, no harm done. :)
