Back in the US with unlocked iPhone.. why "no service"?

I have an AT&T plan for my iPhone, but since I live in Europe most of the year, I had it unlocked (+jailbreak) and used it there with local SIM cards.

Now that I'm back in the US, I thought I could just switch the SIM card, but nada. "no service".

I'd like to understand what goes on - different band?
Did anyone "go back" to their AT&T plan after "cheating them out of horrendous roaming charges"?

.. and now what, simple restore in iTunes? (FW 1.1.4)

that's happned to me a couple of times i just restart my phone and the service comes back tho

power cycling doesn't help

I just restart my phone and the service comes back

Tried that, powercycling it does not help. I also tried resetting all settings and then powercycling.
