Hi all. I just received my new 2019 iMac, I love it so far, but I am just a little cautious/concerned about gaming with Windows 10 via Bootcamp.

These are my iMac specs...

3.7GHz 6-core 9th-generation Intel Core i5 processor
512SSD
Radeon Pro Vega 48

So I only play 2 games through Bootcamp. League of Legends and Final Fantasy XIV. I've noticed that when I play FFXIV (1440, capped at 60 FPS) I notice that the fans come on. Sometimes during certain areas it's a lot louder than usual, and I notice some heat coming out from the back. Is this normal? What would be considered normal temperatures for this machine, and what would be concerning temps?

Any info would be helpful. I am loving this machine, but a little anxious playing games on it. I mainly got this for my lightroom/photoshop work, but still want to play the two games above.

Thanks for the help!

I have 2017 27-inch basic top-tier model (i5 and R580) and I played GTA V via Bootcamp using maximum details on 1440p - it ran wonderful but the fans were spinning as hell. Despite that, there were no problems with performance and once I quit the game, the fans went quiet almost immediately. You don't have to worry about it.

Thank you for the input. You think longterm I shouldn't be worried about it? I mean the fans DO kick in, but it isn't anything loud or super intense, I'm just being a little extra cautious with my new beautiful machine.

I don't think you should be worried at all ;). In long term you would have to put stress on your CPU 24hours a day and even then the system would regulate itself by lowering the frequency or whatever just to keep the CPU or fans safe.

The GPU is used when gaming, which produces wasted energy (heat & noise). It's normal & I'm unsure why you are even asking as the answer is so obvious...

Yes, it’s normal for the fans to come on when the GPU works hard. I’ve seen two or three reviews on YouTube of the 2019 iMac when gaming, and they all mention that the fans come on, so your iMac is behaving like others.

I just ordered the 2019 iMac, but my current iMac is the 2015 model with the Radeon R9 M395X. If I’m playing a graphically-demanding game (especially on a warm day), the fans become quite audible (not loud as such, and nowhere near as annoying as the fan noise in my 2010 iMac, or for that matter in either of my Power Macs).

When it’s working hard, my M395X reaches 100°C, which alarms some people, but which from everything I’ve read is actually a safe temperature for these chips. (The temperature never climbs above 100°C; the GPU does a very good job of regulating its temperature so that it doesn’t exceed that safe value.)

What is your FPS for League of Legends? Another thread trying to compare this with the 580X https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/radeon-pro-580x-27-imac-benchmarks.2176361/#post-27256168

That's weird. I have an i9+Vega 48 and most of the time I don't notice the fans when playing newer games, but I've only tested Apex Legends and Shadow of the Tomb Raider using Windows. Sometimes when the game gets quieter I hear them in the background but I wouldn't say they're very loud, especially compared to the 2017 iMac I had at work for a while with the i7-7700K that would get pretty loud just doing regular tasks.
