Hello,

I have an iMac and a Macbook Pro. I would like to use Back To My Mac to share the screens between those two. I have got it working on LAN and when logging into the other computer as the computer's user.
Now I would like to be able to login to my Macs over the internet. I have read that to do this I should use Apple IDs. When I try to share the screen on one of the Macs, I get the opportunity to login with an Apple ID I have set in "Users and Groups" but when doing so I get an error message.
Sometimes the error message will be:
Authentication of "Simons iMac" failed.
Try again with other authenticationinformation.
Other times it will be:
Authentication of "Simons iMac" failed.
Check that the username and the password is correct.
(Sorry, those error messages are roughly translated from Danish)

Does anyone have an idea how I can get authentication using Apple IDs working and how I can use Back To My Mac outside LAN?

No answer, but have same credentials authentication failure

Have spent three days trouble shooting ... I've tried a lot of things.

When things do work, "they just work." But they do not always work 100%, and then the failures are hard to resolve because it looks so simple when it does work.

Everything else about iCloud is working fine, except Back to My Mac. I keep hoping that an update will magically fix it, otherwise it will take a lot of time to compile all the screenshots and list all the things I've tried, etc.

Back to my Mac

I can't diagnose your problem, but I can tell you how I was able to get it working. I signed into iCloud on both my office and home macs and enabled back to my Mac (BTMM) at each end. I left my office iMac turned on with all sleep except screen sleep, as well as auto shutdown, disabled. When I checked my MB Pro at home, my office iMac appeared in the Finder sidebar just as though it was connected to my home LAN.

I should add that the person who manages the office LAN had previously opened a port to enable this. Apparently this is necessary to get a VPN running (BTMM does it's magic via VPN).

I've never been able to get the sign-in using an Apple ID to work, but for me signing in using a username and password that I know is set up on the target computer works.

From what I can gather from the OP, it is signing in with an Apple ID that is not working. If this is indeed the case, on the basis of neither of us being able to use this option, I'd say it's a problem with Apple's software/iCloud servers rather than our respective configurations.
