'back up data' feature of iCloud

It feels a little vague the 'Back Up To My Mac' or the other backup feature for the phone.

I turn on 'Back up to my mac' on the iCloud settings on my computer and it asks to turn on file sharing, i turn that on, i even share a folder...

but nothing happens?

Is this feature even working? What's the point and what's the difference to say Drop Box because so far, since turning on that feature, nothing actually backs up?
