Hi All,

I want to ask if someone has a website tutorial or info that explains the steps to meet the following backup criteria;

  1. I have 200gb iCloud storage near capacity - I will not be upgrading to the next tier (2TB)
  2. I want to transfer 100gb of photos from iCloud (on windows PC) to my hard drive (not iCloud)
  3. Last time I did this my phone re-uploaded (synced) the photos I removed from the PC iCloud filling up my storage quota again
  4. Obviously I did not do that transfer correctly, or missed a step, so is there a way to do this transfer via iCloaud PC application and have the phone sync via automatic deletion of the photos I moved?

Thanks!

Jason

Not limited to just backing up, but availability cross platform as I have a mixed Windows/Apple environment and frustrated with the experience. Windows can’t read, or even show the existence of an Apple drive. Like you, I use iCloud for storage, but at times inconsistent with MacBook Pro when viewed in Finder if located for posting, and when did airDrop (vs email/download like I do with Windows, or USB memory file transfer) and airDrop changed the file format.
I have put it off for a long time, but currently looking a adding a NAS to my home network system. Leaning towards Synology as their software apps include the ability to include iPhone and IPad photos, as well as cloud network that I control. Just seem to be so many advantages Beyond the basics.

If you have iCloud Photo Library turned on, then anything on your iPhone is going to sync right back again to iCloud. You have to delete the photos from your iCloud Photo Library in order to recover that space. You can delete from either your phone or login to your iCloud account on a browser and start deleting. I think in a Windows environment, the syncs don’t work both ways as well. The iCloud client will download your library to the Windows PC, but deleting them from the iCloud Windows folder won’t remove them from your actual iCloud account.

Re-reading your original question - I have never activated the PC iCloud option for a variety of reasons so just a suggestion for reducing to meet your goal to stay below 200gb. Since iCloud appears to be a bit quirky on a PC, have to involve both Pc and iPhone/iPad. First, copy ALL photos to the PC hard drive. Since still have to reduce the total on iCloud to maintain the below 200gb, do that on the iPhone - unfortunately a tedious one at a time as no “trash/delete” option in the multiselectable “send to” feature. Then if desired go back to the hard drive and delete those you don’t want there, but should be able to choose multiple thumbnails on the screen for a single delete action.
