Back-up iTunes - best method

What is the best method for backup my iTunes music library?

I currently, copy and paste the iTunes folder (Users/"me"/Music/iTunes) to my LaCie external hard drive as and when I want to back up, rather then Time Machine - which I don't use.

Is this the best way? do I need to copy the whole folder every time to copy/backup?

I've done it that way for years. No problems.
However, I don't keep any tracks in cloud, or whatever, for streaming, saving space etc.
That could well cause trouble with a simple backup plan.
