I'm looking for a program with a simple interface to backup my Apple Mail (On My Mac and iCloud). Until recently, I was able to retrieve individual messages from my Time Machine backups (which I store on a Time Capsule). After upgrading to Catalina, that changed and if I try to retrieve an email in Time Machine, then Time Machine shuts down.

So I figured I would export my Inbox each day, using the ability within Mail, but I noticed when I then imported the mbox file as a test, many of my messages (I think those with attachments) were not included. And the mbox name has "partial" in it.

Which made me wonder if there are any reliable, not too expensive, and simple 3rd party programs. I am really not looking to clone my hard drive since Time Machine still works for files, and I use iCloud as another backup source. But for mail, iCloud mail in particular, I'd like another backup option.

Thanks in advance.

Perhaps a different approach - switch to a web mail account that is still accessible from within apple mail. Mail from say, Google, will never go away. Always accessible on the web. And from apple mail.

Thanks, I appreciate the advice. At this stage though I would rather stick with what I am using.

Since TC tends to fail (as you have discovered) and iCloud backup isn't bootable, you really need another backup for the standard 3-3-3 (or other) backup policy.

Thanks. You are correct, though that is part of a bigger analysis I need to do - likely replacing the Time Capsule (which I use as my router) etc. So in the short term I am just looking for a software solution.

Why are you even deleting emails so that you later have to pull them out of backup?

Stop deleting, start filing.
