So from the looks of the iPad demo we saw today, we are going to have wallpaper backgrounds on the new iPhone OS?

No problem! I think they may let you, yes, since it looks very nice. but they need to change the current dock background to something more like mine so it looks good with a background.
It might sound cool but it gets boring/old and distracting after a while.

This is the one thing from the rather lackluster presentation this morning that actually piqued my interest.
It seems Apple have finally realized that having a picture behind their icons in fact isn't the devil.
I foresee four or five "Apple approved" wallpaper images available in the settings with no option for using your own. Seems very Apple-esque to me.

Before I stopped jailbreaking, I went back to the stock black background too, along with removing the App names and the 5-icon dock.
I wanted less, not more.

No problem. I'm fine with four-five 'approved' wallpapers. I'll just SSH into my phone and replace it with something I like if I really don't feel the need to jailbreak in 3.2/4.0.

I think that if they allow background photos, they'll allow background photos. It'll be the same as on the iPad.
Oh my, well post yours right now and we will compare. Mine looks great if you don't have anything better to compare it to.
A background that goes behind applications on an iPhone really needs two things to succeed.
1) Muted colors that won't alter perception of app icons. (I'm talking about stuff like this.)
2) No busy patterns that make app names harder to read.
Your background fails both of these tests. So yeah, I also dispute that it "looks great" when it only has to meet 2 goals and doesn't do either one very well.

Many of the Nexus 1 wallpapers would make good backgrounds though.
Not the photos or the really bright ones, but rather its darker images. I don't know if the Nexus uses them as backgrounds or not, but a lot of them could be used that way.

personally i find backgrounds distracting on the iphone. they compete with the icons a little too much. It looks good on the ipad because the screen is bigger and there is much more space between the icons. but i would still like having the option of backgrounds without having to jailbreak.
Agreed. Apple better bring more than customizable backgrounds to the table for the next iPhone/OS. I don't know about the rest of you, but that sure as hell ain't gettin me moist.
I posted that comment before actually seeing the presentation (watched the live blog until I had to leave for work). It would be strange if they limited what's used on the iPhone while allowing users to use custom images on the iPad (*shudders*).
I also hope this is part of the new OS. I haven't been in the mood to keep my phone jailbroken in a while (well over 6 months), and I've been missing the background on my homescreen.

Tell me, how much of the background wallpaper do you see in the iPad? A lot of it because the icons are small and are spread apart. Hence, it makes sense to have a wallpaper.
On the iPhone, a filled screen or even 3/4 filled with apps takes up 70% of the screen. You would only see 30% of the wallpaper through cracks in between Apps and border of the iPhone OS. It would be asinine - probably why Apple hasn't offered the option yet.

I actually really believe that what we see on the iPad is what we're going to see with iPhone 4.0 (with a lot of additions of course).
I mean, why would they call it "iPhone 3.2" if the features are iPad exclusive? The operating system has a lot of obvious differences from 3.1.2 (iTunes comes to mind) so if these features weren't going to carry over then I would think it would have been "iPad 1.0".

i used bosspaper to remove the text for the app names under the icons and the backgrounds look fine on my phone.
A very big +2. ^^
Although, still a high demand feature from those who prefer stock.
