Im looking for some info relating to the background on the phone.

Im going to remove Winterboard and change icons and doc manually to save lag and also remove mobile substrate(spelling) to help speed increase.

My main question is, from the info Ive read so far, if you dont have winterboard you cant change the background on the phone (where your apps are), if this is the case, how does winterboard manage it? What file does it alter or replace?

Would be greatful for the help.

Thanks

Andy

There is a Cydia app that runs independant of Winterboard that wll do this for you... Desktop/SMS Background

It modifies your wallpaper settings page.

Yea! I noticed this yesterday and thought it may be a good thing for me as someone who doesn't like Winterboard, but I figure it probably runs on mobilesubstrate anyways... Anyone able to confirm?

To SSH a picture into your wallpaper folder these are the directions I followed (can't find original post this was in):

- Get a Wallpaper
- Make it *.png
- SSH: Locate to Library/Wallpaper
- Check what's the next number of the filename (e.g. 118.png is the last wallpaper on the phone)
- Rename your Wallpaper.png to 119.png (accordingly to your next Wallpaper number.)
- Upload 119.png to Library/Wallpaper via SSH
Open Settings/Wallpaper (Thumbnail-File will be generated automatically.)

Then download BossPaper from cydia. With that you can set the springboard background to the new picture/s you put in the wallpaper folder. BossPaper doesn't slow down the iPhone like winterboard does so you should be happy with that. I stopped using winterboard on my 3G since it doesn't have anywhere near the free ram and the 3GS.

Im just about finished changing most of the icons for the apps on the phone that i want for now ,So will give BossPaper and Desktop/SMS Background apps a go soon.

I havent uninstalled mobile substrate yet as i have 5 icon doc.

Is there a way to use five icon dock without mobilesubstrate? i.e edit a plist file or anything like that. The phones available memory has now gone from mid 20s to mid 30s low 40MB all the time without winterboard on. As a result there is pritty much no lag what so ever, where as before there was at least a 2 second delay on anything i pressed.

If i have to use mobile substrate for the 5 icon dock, how does the dock tweak work? Surely that edits a file or something so we should be able to do this manually?

Thanks

Andy
