is there a cydia tweak/app that would allow the official youtube app to have background playback? I already know protube 2 allows you to download videos/mp3s off youtube and choose the quality of playback (720p 1080p)

Man I have been wanting this forever now. I swear by the original ProTube and use it all the time. I never use the download feature myself, but I use the app all the time to listen to music and stuff. There are so many times when I need to minimize ProTube to do something else in a different app and the music just stops playing. I have been keeping my fingers crosses for over a year now that the developer of ProTube would incorporate this into the app.

On a side note, I am having issues with ProTube on my 4S on 6.1. I can't get the extension Open in ProTube to work. I tried sending an email to myself with a link to a youtube video. When I click on it, instead of opening the ProTube app, it opens Safari. Is anyone else experiencing this? Also, I use the Dolphin Browser a lot. Dolphin has a setting that you can turn on which will ALWAYS load the desktop version of a website. I have left this setting turned on since the day they started offering last summer. Whenever I would go to a site like iDownloadBlog, if there was a video inside one of the stories, the play button on the embedded youtube video would be red and I could tap on the video and it would start playing immediately, in full screen mode obviously. Basically, what I'm saying is, anytime I came across a youtube video while using Dolphin, I could always watch the video. But for some reason since upgrading to 6.1, whenever I come across these same videos that used to always play, now I can't play them. The big red play button in the center of the video is now gone replaced by a black one. It's almost like it's just a screenshot. Now the only way for me to view the video is to go into settings and turn off desktop mode and reload the mobile version of the site. I wonder if these two issues are related? Is anyone else experiencing these types of issues with ProTube? (To the OP, I am really sorry for getting so sidetracked. This has been bugging me and when you mentioned ProTube I couldn't resist bringing this up)

There has to be a tweak that allows the playing of YouTube in th background AND while the phone is locked. Too many times I want to listen to a song without having to watch the video, run another app or leave the phone unlocked.

if your interested you can download the app mctube. it has background playback, but still i would like the official youtube app to have it.

Music Controls Pro did this for the official client on 5.x, but not for the Google version from the App Store. I'm not sure whether this functionality will be included in the 6.x-compatible version that's currently in testing.

thanks for the info, i'll keep my eye out for that app.

Why not just use grooveshark? That whole YouTube thing seems like such a chore.
