Backing up an 8GB DVD

Hello everyone,

I bought a DVD with two features (7.8G of data). I would like to back it up without loss of quality, and the best way to do this (I think) is to split it into two DVDs with one feature each. What I tried to do was rip the second feature with MacTheRipper and then burn the VIDEO_TS folder with Roxio Popcorn. The error message was "This is not a valid VIDEO_TS folder." The folder contains one large VOB file.

Is there any way around this? I assume the latest version of Toast would do it, but I do not want to buy anything until I'm sure.

did you rip the title or the title set? i think you need the set to get the other files in the VIDEO_TS folder beside the .vobs that take care of the indexing etc

Three suggestions

First of all, the surest way to make full quality backups would be to use Mac the Ripper with a Dual Layer DVD-R and burner. Of course the cost of doing this is so high that it would probably be cheaper to buy legitimate DVD-Videos unless you are planning to duplicate your local video club's DVD library.

If you have the MPEG2 Plug-In for QuickTime you can use a free utility called MPEG Streamclip to rip any parts of the movies on your DVD without re-encoding. It has an option for creating TS folders so you could use that to create a DVD-Video if the contents are less than 4.4 GB. I am not sure that chapter markers would remain on the finished product.

If you are willing to compromise on quality, there is a great utility called Fast DVD Copy that makes copying DL DVD-Videos and PS2 DVD Games into 4.4 GB DVD-Rs. It costs US $99 but it is so easy to use that for many people without a lot of technical know-how, it would be worth it.

Title set allows me to rip only Title Set 01 (Main feature).
Title Only allows to rip either Title 01 or Title 02, but it saves the Title 02 in the format which Popcorn find invalid.

hmmm. odd. i just tried it out and although it defaults to the main feature title set, the drop down lets you choose any of the others on the disc (doesn't give you any clue which is which tho). Maybe you need to rip the full disc and then use something like DVD2One (or maybe Popcorn, don't know how good its controls are, don't have it) to strip out the separate features at that point.
