My wife had been having some issues with her 8. We are thinking it's her backup st this point because similar issues were exhibited on the 7 (though that had it worse). We are talking freezes, crashes, and severe lag. I define severe lag as the phone taking 15-30 seconds to respond to touch input at times. It's limited to maybe once or twice every other day, but still annoying.

So anyway, she wants to start for scratch. But she has dozens of work contacts she doesn't want to lose. Is there a good way for her to make a backup of just the contacts, start a fresh install/setup of iOS and then restore contacts only?

If she has icloud turned on it’ll backup contacts etc and you can just sign into iCloud after wiping the phone without restoring from backup.

Yes as long her work contacts are saved in icloud, and she starts from scratch and logs into her icloud, she will retain all the contacts saved up.

Might I suggest Google Contacts as a backup safety net. I have never lost any any contacts in iCloud but I like knowing in case it ever fails I have a second option for recovery since my contacts are important to me.
