Is it absolutely necessary backing up all of my data before installing this Beta, or will I not loose any of my files with the installation?

If the upgrade goes fine, no personal data is lost, but if it goes awry, personal data is lost, and since it is a beta, awry is part of the equation.

Since it is your data, you have to know its value and if you can easily re-create it after it has gone.

PS: Backing up is always advised, even when not installing beta software.

I get the idea you're confused, it's not about going through every single file and copying them to a hard drive, it's just going into Time Machine and setting it to backup, it'll do everything for you. There's no better way to do it, it'll back up everything and it's just a flick of a switch.
