backing up ilife 06

i always make copies of original software, in the event something unforseeable happens to the original (ie. kids and pets around).
as ilife 06 is larger than a single layer disc, is there any software available that would allow me to break up the original into two seperate, yet intertwined discs, just as any other multiple disc installer?
and while i could simply go out and get some of those fancy dual layer discs, i have to admit i have a problem spending almost $6.00 per disc, when i can spend less than $0.40 per disc on a single layer dvd.
i know, don't be so cheap.
any help/ideas would be appreciated.

i tried using toast 7, but i must not have had the settings correctly. can you give a little more detail on the exact process/settings to make? all i got was the classic message - the disc does not have enough avaialble memory blah blah blah.

well, it spanned it across two discs, but when i tried to run the restore app i got an error saying the directory file was missing in order to restore. not really sure why this didn't work, but then my brain kicked in and i remembered about the functionality of stuffit.
i'll try that and let you know if it works.

I never like to depend on some "magic backup program". By "magic" I mean it does "stuff" that you can't know what. If you loose the backup program or if the "magic" changes in the next version youre stuck. I like to make backups that I _know_ can be read even on a different type of computer with a different operating system. OK maybe that's overkill for backnf up iLife 6. Who will want it next year. It's a short lived archive but for iLfe DATA it's a diffent story. Someone might want you photos 75 years from now and it's unlikely he'd have an Mac with OSX.

Take a look at "dump" It also is included with Mac OSX. From the "dump" man page....

"...Dump examines files on a filesystem and determines which files need to be backed up. These files are copied to the given disk, tape or other storage medium for safe keeping (see the -f option below for doing remote backups). A dump that is larger than the output medium is broken into multiple volumes...

on a terminal type "man dump" to read more. Note that an "other storage medium" can be a file in a burn folder that can then be copied to DVD.

one other option would be to use "tar" piped to "split" to make a set of 4GB files then copy those as files to DVD data disks. This could be reassembled on any UNIX-like comuter or even on a Windows PC. "tar" (short for tape archive) is universal and it's already on your mac This is actually easier to use then dump and tar is a bit more universal

you need to download the latest toast update v7.0.2.
