Backing up Notes

I am a pretty heavy user of the Apple Notes app on both Mac OS and iOS. Given how unreliable this app is sometimes (notes disappear, notes are not synced across devices, etc.) I was wondering if there is a good way to periodically back these up outside of iCloud (which I am already doing). I tried to hack a few things but nothing really works well and I could not find a good alternative notes apps that fit my needs.
