Backing up Photos

Hi,

I'm new to Mac and iPhoto. I've recently imported some vacation pics into iPhoto but now I would like to back them up to CD or DVD just in case.

I've made some edits and modifications, so I want to make sure that iPhoto will burn the modified version, not the original. Also, I would like the disc to just contain the plain photo files to be readable on any computer (no slideshow or anything like that). How do I do this?

Another question - how would I burn a CD of a slideshow for someone? i.e. so they could stick the disc into their computer and just have a slideshow start playing.

Put the photos you want to back up in an album. Select that album, then go down to the bottom toolbar and click "burn." You'll get this sort of pulsing radioactive button. Insert a blank CD or DVD and you're off.

This backup will only work with iPhoto -- that is, the photos will be stored in a hierarchical database format that works best with iPhoto. If you want to back up to something more universal, then you'll have to drag the photos to another folder -- say, one on your desktop -- and burn the image files. If you only want to burn the edited files, then you'll have to do it the drag-and-drop way too. iPhoto always endeavors to include originals, though I wish it were only an option. It's too "pro" for my needs.

If you want to make a slideshow, you'll have to do it through iDVD using the "send to iDVD" features. I don't think you can burn a CD slideshow. The best thing to do would be to post the slideshow onto your .Mac account or just refer a friend to your Flickr page.

You could also get .Mac and backup your photos that way - automatically, I believe.
