hello,

I have an old HDD backup that I would like to archive, its 60GB. I thought I would back it up to Bluray 100GB disc. Is this a good idea, or is it prone to fail? Do people usually do this kind of thing?

Is it better to burn a disc image to it or backup it up like I usually backup to an external HDD?
If I choose to encrypt the disc image, should i expect trouble in the future or is it a reliable?

You would want to use the BluRay media that IS NOT "dye-based" for purposes of longevity.

The "non-dye based" BluRay blanks will last much longer, as they use a technology that I believe is identical (or nearly-identical) to the mineral-based "M-Disc" technology.

You have to research the product numbers carefully to distinguish one from the other.

I happen to like Verbatim blanks, myself.

I would burn in "plain finder format" -- no encryption, disk images, etc.
In an emergency you want backups that are as easy to access as possible.
At least… I would.

So you have experience doing this?
what software do you use for backup?
Do I need special software to burn BD disc or can OS X do it natively?

I use DVD fab to back up my Bluray and my Bluray 3D (keeping them 3d so i can watch them in my ATV)...but their lastest version is meh..and support for Mac is very slow (hat to wait 2 weeks for the sierra compatible versiojn...)

But it works.
