Hey guys, I wonder if there is a way to automatically backup to iCloud. I always to it everyday before i go to sleep. If i could set it up to do it automatically at 3am, that would be cool.

If you have iCloud backup turned on it will automatically backup when it is plugged in and the screen is locked (so basically at night while you sleep.) If you plug in your phone at night, check it when you wake up, you will see it says last backed up, yesterday at (whatever time it backed up)

Go to iCloud under settings and click on Storage and Backup. Turn on iCloud Backup. Your iPhone will have to be plugged in to power and locked with wifi connectivity and it will backup once every 24 hours - automatically.

You can not set the time for iCloud to backup automatically. It just does it ONCE every 24 hours.

Also remember, if you have iCloud Backup turned ON, you need to manually backup to your computer. It will not backup anymore when you sync.

Thanks for the answers guys. Since I manually back it up yesterday at 9pm, does that mean that iCloud will automatically backup to iCloud at 9pm or later in the night when I will have it plugged?

So if you've manually backed up to iCloud at 9PM on 10/28, then when you have your iPhone plugged in charging + connected to Wi-Fi + locked screen at 9PM on 10/29, it will automatically back up to iCloud shortly after if you leave the iPhone untouched (meaning keep it on the locked screen).

Aren't contacts backed up explicitly on the iCloud backup? (outside of the Address Book)

While trying to merge contacts from "All on My Mac" and "iCloud" did delete everything from the iCloud address book.

Restoring from the iCloud backup, didn't bring back any of the contacts.

No, the iCloud backup does not include contacts. You have to explicitly turn on iCloud Contacts under the iCloud settings an that will keep your iCloud contacts constantly backed up.

sync vs. backup

iCloud is a sync and backup service: it syncs contacts and calendars for example and it backs up app data, for example. If you delete a contact it is deleted on every iCloud device.

I experienced this the hard way with calendars. I stupidly thought I was deleting duplicate calendars when, in fact, I deleted my iCloud calendars. I saw no way to recover these calendars from iCloud. FWIW, I recovered from a computer that still had my calendar from MobileMe. I was able to export the calendar on that computer and import into iCloud on another computer.

I think Time Machine will provide the contacts and calendar backup, however.

sync and cal syncing is an on the fly thing....it happens immediately, not when you backup at night.

BTW, You can wifi sync and icloud sync at the same time. I do it so I will have my podcasts auto sync'd to my iPhone every night.
