I haven't used iTunes in years. I think the last time I backed up my phone was when I had an Iphone 12. I had the 14PM since and now just got the 16PM. What would happen if I tried to back up the 16PM? I'm trying to remember how itunes works. Would I back up as a new phone? I don't use Icloud. I take way too many photos for that. I just use google photos instead and delete the photos I no longer want off the phone.

First things first, man. Do you still have your iPhone 14 Pro Max? You can give direct transfer a try during new iPhone setup assistant on your 16. That iPhone 12 backup is ages ago.

Second, direct transfer and Quick Start requires the old iPhone to be present, so read above 👆🏻 prior to setting up the iPhone as new. It can only be done during the setup process. After the direct transfer and Quick Start is done, continue setup flow, sign in with your Apple ID and then backup your new iPhone to iTunes.

No I wasn't trying to back up from Itunes from an old back up. I already did the iphone to iphone transfer a week ago. What I meant was, if I connect the 16pm to intunes, can I back that up to my computer with no issues despite not having backed up an iphone in years/several phones ago?

iTunes may prompt you to download a software supplement so it can talk to your 16PM but it should backup fine after you do that

It is like that when you connect an iPhone that is running newer iOS versions into a Mac that is running an older version of macOS or still needs to use Finder. Are you planning to use a Mac to backup or restore your iPhone? If you use a PC, you use the Apple devices app that you can download from the Microsoft Store.

No but I use my Mac running High Sierra to update my devices and do encrypted backups once a month.. Last tome it prompted the software patch was when I received my 15PM

Really surprised no one mentioned this yet, but you don't use iTunes anymore to back up your phone. That functionality was moved to Finder.

Forgot to correct 👍 bout that, MB. That has been there since macOS Catalina came out, I will edit the post so OP can easily read it. Thanks

Nice! Wasn't calling you out BTW. I just searched for "finder" and didn't find it.

I did connect my iPhone to my PC via Apple devices and it does not tell me to install software updates for the driver, but on a MacBook Air 2017 I borrowed for a few times at school it does prompt me to install something like that on there. It runs its last supported macOS Monterey.

Should still work. Are you using Finder on your Mac or using a PC with iTunes or Apple devices? Which version of macOS or windows 🪟 does it run?
