Hey guys, do you think we will see the backlit keyboard back on the MBA before next summer (over 300 days from now on)?

This whole issue is so typical of Apple. Who the hell thought that it was acceptable or even a good idea to take that option away?!

What's next? No optical drive, no USB and no decent video ports on the Mini?

Hey guys, thanks for your quick answer... but you don't think apple will take the critic an change the KB to a backlight keyboard i the nearest future (before next summer).

But no, its a strange question why the to that feature away.... :(

I think we will with next revision, BUT, as almost no one has complained about it, i think the reflective coating they painted the keys with is doing a pretty good job in making them readable at night, I hope I'm not wrong.

Cheers

Has it been established if the reason for the omission is technical? Meaning, it the air is so thin that a backlit keyboard would be impossible?

If the reason is technical, I can forgive it kind of--but why not keep the air the same thickness as the last generation's?

If the reason is non-technical, then shame on them! But it will be back next year, I guarantee it north of 90%. I believe that the omission was done to differentiate their products and to create room for upgrades next year and a PR spin about how Apple listens to their customers. The interesting thing is that the 13" also lost the backlit keys, which makes me think that it may have been a technical reason, which in that case I say, stop being obssessed with thinness. It's already ridiculously thin enough.

much rather it be thin than have a backlit keyboard. I've gotten used to having backlit keyboards, and while they look cool... I don't really find it all that useful of a feature. Minus some use of function keys I almost never look at the keyboard. I'm continuously stunned that people that would be buying an air don't know how to touch type.

I think it will be in the next refresh in October 2011

I think it will be too. I think they took these away to save cost, then as the cost of mfg goes down they can add them back and maintain profit margins (before anyone actually calls me out on it, yes I know nothing about manufacturing)

backlit keyboard would waste more battery.
I would have to disagree, sort of. My currently Macbook Pro is my first Notebook with a backlit keyboard. It significantly decreases the amount of mistakes typed on the keyboard at night increasing my productivity.

The last two don't make sense as how would you even use the Mini without a video output? USB is important as well.

As for the optical drive though, I actually thought that would have been gone by now. The external USB superdrive is the solution to this and gives Apple a chance to tag the accessory on at the checkout process.

I was wondering the same... knowing Apple, I figured they omitted it to keep certain features premium and native to the MacBook Pro, encouraging upgrades.
