Yesterday I was doing an outdoor cycling workout and noticed the compass app suddenly was in the foreground and would keep coming to the foreground even when I had Workouts there. I finally stopped and and deleted the track and all was good after that. Today while riding with my wife both of our watches went into Backtrack mode automatically. Anyone else experiencing this with watchOS 11? It never happened with watchOS 10.

Same thing happened to me yesterday while using the hiking workout. Never happened before couldnt figure out what was going on. Today using the Outdoor Walk workout, it worked as expected. Ultra 1 with OS11.

I seem to remember reading somewhere that if it senses you're in a "remote" location when you start a workout, it will automatically start a Backtrack. I can't find where I read it to link it, and who knows what Apple's criteria is for "remote location", but that's probably what you're experiencing.

With my first outdoor cycle, I was at mile 15 and 2nd at mile 5, so both were well into my workout when it happened.

Probably the new feature added in watchOS10. In the Watch app in the iPhone, go to Workout, there is an option called "Backtrack", which turns ON when it thinks you're in a remote location.
