I've currently got a 2017 touchbar MBP running Catalina and have just ordered the new M1 16" MBP which I assume will ship with Monterey (although the 24" iMac I've just received has Big Sur) and want to know the best way to migrate to the new computer please.

I have always been told that you should install fresh rather than installing a time machine backup from the old computer, is this still the case? (I appreciate I'd have to update my current MBP to the same OS as the new one if I wanted to do this)

When installing from fresh and wanting to transfer files from the old computer. I have been told that Carbon Copy Cloner and/or Super Duper are better than Time Machine as it appears as a separate drive in finder that you can use like any other drive, however I can do that with my time machine back ups. If I go into the time machine drive I can click on the backups folder, open up the latest backup and I have all the files there. However there is one big problem.

My MBP has two libraries, one accessed from the finder "go" menu and one accessed from the Macintosh HD, and for reasons I'm not sure of they are different and some system files go into one of the libraries and some system files go into the other library.

Now if I open up the time machine back up I can also access two libraries, one looks to be a carbon copy of the one I access from Macintosh HD, but the other one doesn't appear to replicate the one from the "go" menu as it has some different folders, missing some of the folders and some of the folders that do match have different numbers of items in them.

If I use Carbon Copy Cloner or Super Duper would it have the library folders and would they be an exact match so that I can simply drag and drop settings, plists and system files from the backup to my MBP libraries? My main area of concern is that I have various plugins for Logic Pro, each with my own saved presets, likewise with some of the logic instruments, plus I have channel strip settings saved etc and I will obviously want to migrate these to the new computer. I have a similar thing with Adobe Lightroom, I have develop presets and import presets saved, as well as export settings.

Can anyone please advise of the best way to backup and migrate over to the new MBP when it arrives?

Just before the new MBP comes out of the box, do a "last incremental update" to a backup drive using CCC.

Now take the new MBP out.
Connect the backup drive.
NOW, open the lid to boot the new MBP for the very first time.

Begin setup.
At the appropriate moment, setup assistant will ask if you wish to migrate.
YES you want to do this.
"Aim" setup assistant at the backup and give it time to "digest" everything.

Setup assistant will present you with a list of stuff to migrate.
It's UP TO YOU as to what to bring over, and what to leave behind.

Then, turn setup assistant loose and let it do the migration, it will take a while.

That's probably "the standard way" to do it.

Thanks very much, does the setup assistant allow you to choose system files from the libraries too, and secondly would the CCC backup need to have been backed up from the same OS, or can I leave my old MBP as Catalina?

I've never used migration assistant before, always just 'restored'/setup from a Time Machine backup.

System files DO NOT get migrated.
The OS doesn't need to be the same (and usually, isn't).

But... I recommend that you go through the process of creating a full backup anyway.
The setup assistant knows "what to bring over" and "what to leave behind"...

OK thanks, does that include things like the. instrument presets and camera picture profiles that I've mentioned above?

Lastly, does the backup need to be the same OS as the new computer?

"Lastly, does the backup need to be the same OS as the new computer?"

No.
Just use setup assistant with the CCC backup.
I predict you'll be quite satisfied with the results...

Thanks, appreciate the help. I'll update when I get the new computer (ETA 6-12 December)
