I tried to back up last week and the older version of BU I had would not do it because I recently upgraded to Panther. Apple site said to use 2.0.2 with Panther so I upgraded.

Well, I have only the 100MB space on .mac they provide with the basic membership and it is taking hours to backup my stuff. Should it be taking hours to backup less than 100MB of stuff using Backup? For some reason after upgrading BU I had to delete everything on iDisk BU folder *(used BU app. to do this) so obviously I am backing up everything from scratch...but it is only 100 MB! It is driving me crazy.

FYI I have DSL through Verizon which is incredibly fast as I am a block from their main office. I have done online tests and the speed can reach into T1 territory which is nice :)

Anyway, does anyone have any ideas why it would take so darn long. I have an iMac 17" 1 ghz.

Thanks~

a few things:

1) .mac is slow, it takes me like 2 mins to upload a 1 meg files on my 4mbit cable connection

2) T1 is not that fast (no offence to anyone who has it or below) Personally i think T1's are overrated and are priced too high we pay for a 4mbit rr connection for less than we could get a t1 for (actualy we are in the process of downgrading to the home rr, in central ny they have just recently upped the home one to 2mbit actually at a friends house we got 2.5-3 mbit speeds with his:D )

[edit: with verizon you should be getting at least T1 speeds.....but then again it depends on you distance from operation center...etc.]

.Mac is Slow

Yea, this is normal of .Mac and it didn't seem to improve much when Apple started charging for those services. Reading from .Mac is much faster than writing to .Mac. I hope it gets fixed this summer when they introduce a revamped .Mac service.

I usually start the backup and go to bed and I only have 100 Mb. So if it takes 1 second or 6 hours, it doesn't matter to me anymore.

By the way, it use to several times faster to transfer to iDisk by connecting to the server from the Finder and typing in afp://idisk.mac.com and then enter your username and password when prompted. It doesn't seem to work anymore.

Maybe I don't know enough about high speed...all I know is comparing it to all the high speed acess points I have used in the past it is by far the fastest!

so here is a question...after doing online testing of the broadband connection I have it says 1370 to 1374 Kbps download speed (obviously the upload is much much slower- 130 range) How fast is this download speed? Should the upload speed be that slow...I know it is supposed to be slower, but that is a considerable difference.

this speed is running a 50 foot phone cord from the DSL modem to the wall plug...which I want to shorten soon, or at least place the modem by the wall and use a long ethernet cord instead which I think would help speeds some?!?!

Upload speeds for "home packages" are generally very slow.

Nusuni is correct. Your dl may compare to a T1 (which are NOT overrated) but your upload is most likly about 1/20 of that. 2 hours seems a little long to upload 100 megs but it will take quite a while. Much longer than dling a 100 meg file.
