Hi! I just joined MacRumors because I want to see if anyone out there can offer any suggestions on how I might be able to find an old backup of my iPhone. Without going into gory detail yet, here are the salient points:
  • my phone was stolen in October 2017, although it was never unlocked that I know of and my Apple ID was never compromised
  • a backup of the phone existed from just a few hours before it was stolen
  • while waiting for a new phone, I reactivated an old iPhone to use in the meantime
  • when I activated the new phone, the backup of the stolen phone did not show up as an option
There are (as I mentioned) lots more gory details about all of this. I have put together a sequence of events and occurrences that I think explain what happened. I place blame on AT&T, Apple, and myself (but only because I trusted the former two companies and their representatives). However, I believe there was no malicious intent beyond the actual stealing of my phone.

My goal is simple: to gain access to a (hopefully) archived copy of my backup. I should tell you that I have spent hours talking to Apple representatives and I've been told that there is no such archive. While this may be the case, I am not yet ready to accept this fate, which is what has led me to create this post.

I look forward to any/all ideas/suggestions from this community of enthusiasts and experts. Thanks in advance!

Was the older iPhone on an older iOS? It will need to be the same iOS or newer to use an iCloud backup.

However if Apple is telling you that there is no backup then that probably means there is NO backup.

The stolen phone was a 6+, the temporary was a 5S, and my new phone is a X. I don't know what version of iOS was on the phone when it was stolen, but it was certainly the same major release (i.e., iOS 11) as the new phone if not the latest update. But the backup just disappeared from everywhere, no option to restore from it or do anything with it, just gone. Apple claims that there is no proof that I even backed up the 6+, which is somewhat infuriating. I wish I had a screenshot showing the backup, but why would you ever think you'd need to prove such a thing?

I realize this whole thing is a longshot. I really think my only hope would be to make friends with an Apple engineer, which is very unlikely. Anyways, thanks for your reply.
