Hi,

I just got the message on my iPad Pro that I don't have enough free iCloud storage space anymore to perform an online backup. A few days ago (after the last backup date) I moved about 70 GB of videos from my external SSD onto my iPad (I stored the videos locally on my iPad (not in iCloud)). Right now I'm using 40 GB of my 50 GB iCloud storage.

My question: Will these 70 GB be part of the backup? If so then no wonder I get the message BUT it doesn't seem like it because I looked up what iOS tells me how big the next backup is going to be and it says 50 MB... But maybe that's a bug 🤷‍♂️

Perhaps someone knows the answer.

Best wishes and thanks in advance
Chris

Quick update: I tried to do a manual backup but after it was stuck for a few minutes it just failed. It says on the backup screen that not enough iCloud space is available. But as I mentioned iPadOS tells me that the next backup is going to be ~50 MB and I have 9 GB free.

Anyone knows what's going on?

The only thing that I can imagine what the problem could be are the 70 GB of locally stored videos but why doesn't it show this content in the backup overview IF that's part of the backup so that I can exclude it?

Another update: I upgraded to 200 GB iCloud storage because I was running low on available storage and later (I completely forgot about the iPad backup in the meantime) I saw that the iPad backup was already over 50 GB big. So apparently it's definitely the case that videos that are locally stored on the device are part of the backup. Without any possibility to exclude them from the backup that's a major letdown for me.

Anyone has any idea if/how it's possible to exclude these files from the backup?

I have the same problem! I also put some videos locally on my iPad. I removed them now and the backup is still not working and not showing the next size of the backup. I hope there will be a fix/solution soon...

Did you try to do the backup manually by going into the settings —> [Your name] —> iCloud —> iCloud backup? I did this after removing the huge backup I had and that worked well then.

The “next backup size” is calculated by deducting the last full backup size from estimated backup size. So, having a small number only means your backup won’t increase in size as fast as you might think.

As for the video, if those videos are stored locally in a third party app, they may get backed up. But if those are stores inside TV app or video app, then those may not get backed up. You can certainly check what has been backed up in settings to get a general idea of how much space your videos may take in your backup.

That‘s how it should work but in my case the backup was already 50 GB big (it got stuck) and the last one was about 1 GB so for me the estimated size was completely wrong.

Also I transferred the videos locally to my iPad‘s internal storage (no third party app) and the problem is that these videos didn’t show up where I can deselect things which I don’t want to backup.

I solved the problem by deleting the items in the „Recently deleted folder“. Now the backup was successful! It will try to save all your local files, keep that in mind.
