Hey All

I have an iPhone 6 with iOS 8.4.1. I am planing to sell it before iPhone 6S gets announced.
But i am afraid if i sell my 6 now and will try to use my backup from 8.4.1 to iOS 9, it won't let me restore it.

Is that true? can someone come with a solution? or should i just hold on and miss few bucks and buy the new one first and then sell the old one?

I'm going by memory but if I'm mis-speaking someone will correct me. There should be no problem setting up an iPhone 6S running iOS 9 by restoring a backup of your current phone running iOS 8.4. The issue is that you can't usually go the other way (load a backup that relies on iOS 9 onto a device running 8.x).

Hmm thank you, but strangely if i use backup of ios 8, i can't use it on iOS 7 devices. Could anyone else confirm?

Maybe I wasn't clear. You should be able to restore a backup from an earlier iOS version to a device running a later version. I don't think you can restore a backup from a later version of iOS to a device running an earlier version. Therefore, an iOS 8 backup won't restore onto an iOS 7 device.

I've restored my 8.4.1 iPad backup after updating to iOS 9 beta. No issues at all. You can't however as mentioned use a iOS 9 backup on an earlier iOS version. It only works with iOS 9 and up.

Yup, it's essentially that a newer iOS version will know about the previous (older ones) and thus be able to use their backups, while an older version doesn't know anything about newer ones and thus won't be able to use their backups.
