I have some applications that will basically be a PITA if I turn this computer fully off. I'm currently allowing the system to sleep at the moment. At some point I will need to restart.

How can I save and resume everything? I would like to see the programs I am using right now to be in the exact same state when I restore the backup.
What is that called? What can I search for to find what I'm looking for?

You are using Mac OS X, correct?

If you check this box, you will return to the state where you left-off.

I would--however--save any, er, un-saved documents that you are editing ;)

OTOH, there is no real necessity that you power-off your System . . .
