I will be buying an iMac in the coming months and plan on putting videos, music, photos, etc. on the hardrive. I was wondering, what are the different ways that I can backup my files?

there are a few options.

wait for TimeMachine with leopard which can do incremental backups for you.
Synk for certain folders and the like
SuperDuper! for cloning and keeping up to date your clone

No .. You can back-up onto CD / DVD as well as to an external drive or a second internal drive (if your Mac allows more than one internal drive) ... :)

If not an external drive, what are you looking for?

You can back up to a CD/DVD
You can back up to a .mac account if you have one

CarbonCopyCloner is another option similar to SuperDuper

Backup with the .mac account will do the job too

Many external drives come with back up software like Lacie's SilverKeeper

In addition to .mac, there are other online backup services that give you much greater space. I use Mozy, which is in beta for the Mac but has worked so far for me. I have over 400 GB backed up on Mozy.

I'm sort of a backup fanatic. I have 2 main drives, System and Media. Both are backed up using SuperDuper to hard drives #3 and #4. I also use Mozy. And once a month I do an incremental backup of photos and video to DVDs and keep that stored at work.

With an iMac, an external drive cloned using SuperDuper or one of the other programs the others have mentioned would work well. And, for really important stuff, consider an online backup too, .Mac or something else depending on how much data you have.

Well, seeing as how I will have a huge amount of files, an external hardrive is probably by best option...

Yes, it would be... and they are reasonable these days.
I have a LaCie and while there are fans and critics, I've never had a problem. Usually it is a matter of personal preferences and past personal history.

Just remember, a backup plan only works if you actually back up :)

Truer words were never spoken. That's another plus for an external drive with SuperDuper or an online service: fire and forget.
