Backup my data option on Note2?

That particular option is the option to backup to googles servers, so if you leave it checked next time you login to your google account on any Android phone your contacts and apps will be downloaded automatically.
Because Google does not backup sms or backgrounds there is another backup option in the "Cloud" section of the settings and this will backup your sms and backgrounds with Samsung themselves and this option would be more device specific but would work on another Note 2.

1. It will re-download all of the apps that I had previously?
2. Will it place them on each home screen as I had previously set-up?
3. Where is the 'option in the "Cloud" section of the settings?'

This might be it, I'm not a 100% sure though. Hope it helps.
Settings>Samsung Account>Device Backup>Restore
Settings>Samsung Account>Device Backup>Back up now.

Helped me! Now I know I danged better setup a Samsung account. Had been not wanting to do that.
EDIT: Well, maybe not so much. I don't have a Device Backup option. It only shows the email address I registered with and General Settings. When I tap on my email address it only lists contacts, calendar, internet, and s note for sync options. The first two I don't need as I use google. I don't know what is meant by internet synching but I suspect it is included browser, which I do not use (I use Chrome).

That Google account backup backs up next-to-nothing. If you were hoping for it to restore your app data, then you're going to be in for disappointment. I don't know about that Samsung account backup though, I don't have any Samsung devices- maybe it will perform a full backup, give it a go.
Agreed on Google's backup services--next to useless, which is surprising considering their experience in the cloud. No app data is backed up and in my experience, sometimes it automatically downloads apps, other times it doesn't.
Most robust backup options are only available via rooting.
I don't get it either. Most people buying an Android device aren't going to have a clue how to root + unlock their phone and install a backup solution like Titanium Backup (or how to make Titanium Backup work). Google really needs to make a desktop companion app, like Android File Transfer for Macs, that can handle doing full backups for non-rooted devices, so people that aren't tech enthusiasts aren't left without a backup solution. Either that or give Android users some sort of free cloud storage for full backups.
