I have the Lacie external for backups using Time Machine. It has backed up my MBP. Do I just plug it in and start backing up my new Imac or do I have to somehow reformat it before using it on the new machine????

You can use the same drive, and keep your TM backup of the MBP. TM will start a new one. They can both reside together on the same drive. You'll be able to browse the MBP anytime you need to, but the iMac will have it's own, separate backup. (That's all assuming you have enough free space for both.)

So, yes, you just plug it in and start using it for your iMac. The first time you plug the drive in, the iMac should ask if you want to use it for backups.

Backup

Just what I needed to know. I am giving my MBP to my son i n another city. How do I go about getting rid of the MBP backup data?

Backup

The computer just answered my question. It ask me if I wanted to reuse the space that was aready used. I said yes. It's in the process.
