Backup options

Gurus,

I've got the Yosemite installer, DiskmakerX and a USB drive to put it on.

I've also got a Time Capsule that my MBP backs up to, but I want to know about maybe using something like Carbon Copy Cloner to create a bootable clone drive.

Does it need an 'empty' drive, or can I specify a folder on a drive I already have?

Failing that, what other options do I have?

For me, I have DiskMaker now on a separate drive, and will soon will have CCC once that is finally updated for Yosemite on a separate USB drive. CCC is still beta, but it did work for Beta Yosemite. Never install a back up on a back up. Just in case that one thumb drive goes belly up.

Also have Time Machine as well on a separate USB drive. They are cheap, and I just want to make sure.

Thanks, I guess what I'm getting at is do I need a *blank* external HDD for CCC to copy everything to?

For example, in Windows, I can use a program called Macrium to create a bootable image and it saves it as a single *.IMG file, anywhere you like on the drive.

So I can use a drive that's got lots of data on it and just save the image file in a seperate folder.

No you do not need separate drives. Just partition the one drive with one partition for each task. The downside it you have all your eggs in one basket there on one drive, but it will work fine.
