Backup Problem

I had a backup of ios 9.3.2, but iTunes cant seem to find it, so its practically lost.

I backed up ios 10 Beta 1, and when I restored my iPhone, it says you basically cant use an ios 10 backup for ios 9. If I go back to the beta, can I use my previous backup of ios 10 beta 1? Do I have to download the IPSW and "alt" click and open it up and force it to use it? All my **** is lost until I go back to ios 10.

Unfortunately, backups are forward-oriented, meaning that they only work with the OS that they were created on and up. So, no, you can't use an iOS 10 backup with iOS 9. You can, however, use your backup if you reinstall the beta.

Have you tried manually looking in the iTunes folder for your backup? If you can find it and move it to a different folder, you might be able to point iTunes to it so you can use it to restore.

I'm going to reinstall the beta later tonight when I get home, Apple should be signing the beta, so I'll be fine.

I tried looking manually and cant find it. I couldnt even find the beta backup without using iTunes.

iTunes shows you all the backups available and I had to right click > show in finder > and then show each enclosing folder to get to the MobileSync folder. I think my Mac is hiding folders on me

For next time you jump from release to a beta archive the release backup. Options to do so in iTunes on the Mac.

For a solution to now. Go back to iOS 10, restore to your latest iOS 10 backup. Then download the 9.3.2 ipsw and then in iTunes on your Mac hold the Option key down on the keyboard and click Update. Select the 9.3.2 ipsw file and it will just install 9.3.2 over top the iOS 10. Retaining your data and such. (Works like updating upwards to a new version)

Though I have seen a person or two say that the music app will crash currently with this method.

Still worth a shot rather than staying on iOS 9 without a current backup or sticking out the iOS 10 beta. Beta 2 should be releasing after the weekend, so it might not be so bad just sticking out the beta.

You could use the iOS 10 ipsw. But I personally would have gone. Install the iOS 10 beta profile, update back to iOS 10, restore to the most up to date backup (your iOS 10 backup) and then remove the profile. Then use the 9.3.2 ipsw with the Option key to "update" back to iOS 9.3.2. It should keep all data.

While a device is on iOS 10 using the Option key on the mac keyboard while you click on "update" in iTunes and selecting the 9.3.2 ipsw file will just install 9.3.2 over top the iOS 10 install. It works identical to if you were to update to a new version, except in reverse. This is how it's worked since at least iOS 9 beta.

the iOS 10 .ipsw only works if you have Xcode 8 installed.

As lagwagon has said, if you update to iOS 10, restore your backup and option+update the 9.3.2 .ipsw, it will revert back to iOS 9 and your data will be kept intact.

Always make sure you archive your backup before updating because once you backup again, the old one will be written over, unless its been previously archived.

Yeah I forgot to do that with iOS 9.3.3 beta 1 going back to 9.3.2. :/ had to reupgrade to 9.3.3 and down again to 9.3.2. 15 minute process took over an hour. Oops.

I'm on the beta now, and I just removed my profile. Then click update to go back to iOS9? so deleting my profile will notify the Apple as I should be on iOS 9 where leaving my profile on makes them push me to iOS 10 or just tell me I'm on the latest software.

You need to download 9.3.2 for your device. Once downloaded, you plug in your device and click option+update. This will bring you up to a finder window and you need to select the .ipsw that you downloaded.

Awesome! Glad it worked out for you. If you ever decide to go back to iOS 10, make sure you archive your backup by going to. iTunes -> Preferences -> Devices. Right click the backup and click archive.

the music app does crash lol I can't live without music. Since I have an iOS 9 backup, I should be able to do a restore and then load the iOS 9 backup. that should fix it. I'm going to try it now.

backed up iOS 9 and then did a full restore and loaded the backup and now the music app works. My hard drive must be failing cause I had to copy the backup and do it on another computer. It's freezing and ticking.
