Hi, sorry if this has been asked before but I don't see it.
Here is my situation. I have a stock 2G iPhone and want to jailbreak only. Sometimes when I sync my phone with iTunes it will create a backup. Now if I jailbreak and then connect to iTunes and my phone decides to back up, will it overwrite my "stock" backup and prevent me from cleanly restoring my iPhone to original if I want to do that?

Also, I was reading the tutorial from iClarified about jailbreaking and in step 11 it asks for a user name and password. I don't use a windows password, if I leave that field blank will it still work?

Finally one last thing. Will I lose my contacts list from jailbreaking or reverting back to original from a jailbreak?

Thanks for any help. I am very new to modifying phones!

when I jailbroke my phone it left all my contacts, media, emails, settings, etc the same... in other words it just cracked the OS. I believe the process is still the same (as it was during 1.1.4)

If you choose to restore your phone to default (as Im sure you will, which is why I dont see the point in JBing anyway) you will restore, then select the backup it created. A jailbreak only cracks the OS, so I don't think there will be a problem restoring the backup because I dont believe the backup will backup the OS.

If that fails then you will simply choose to "set up new phone" or something like that, then you will have to start over. If your contacts are synced to your computer AS THEY SHOULD BE, then you wont have a problem restoring them... You will just have to setup your email, and settings back to how they were before.

First you need to ask yourself why you want to jailbreak it. At this point I don't even see a reason to do it!

^^ yup, hes exactly right..AFTER you jailbreak, it'll ask if you wanna set up as a new phone, or restore from backup, you choose from backup...its perfectly fine, it'll just have all your settings, and your apps and stuff...but the OS is still cracked.

Thanks for the replies. ME1000, I am not completely sold on the idea of jailbreaking. I thought it would be fun to have a video recorder on the phone and I like the idea of customizing the springboards.

...you gonna complete that thought? What'd you want us to do? show you a picture of the phone? look on the Post your springboard 2.0 thread or whatever its name is

Like I said, I don't see the point any more.

I jailbroke my phone at 1.1.4 for the sole purpose of 3rd party applications and it wasn't worth it at the time. With 2.x 3rd party apps are abundant (and better than anything I saw on the installer.app at the time)

It is up to you, you aren't going to brick your phone or anything if you do it, but it is just a lot of trouble with little return (in my opinion)

Thanks for your input. I think I will wait a little longer. I hope Apple allows a video recording App soon.
