Hello,

Having some problems upgrading to iOS 5, seems this has identified a shortcoming in (perhaps my understanding of?) backups done in iTune..?

I like the fact every time I plug my iDevices into my (Windows 7) laptop iTunes fires up and it does a backup; in the past I've successfully restored these backs to my device after it has messed up etc. I have 3 iDevices, under Preferences I can see each with a backup (and latest date).

I plugged in my iPhone prior to upgrading - it did a backup & full sync. I then did the upgrade, several hours and various difficulties later (mostly errors relating to presumably overloaded Apple servers, then probably a "user error" in that post-upgrade I unplugged the cable as I thought it had hung again.. yet it seems in iOS 5 it now acts differently and can still be doing something despite not saying "Sync in progress" on the screen etc) tried plugging it in, unplugging etc, sync'ing, a few hours later I decided that while my phone was now upgraded it wasn't in too healthy-a state = restore from backup time. HOWEVER when I go to select a backup to restore it gives me the option to pick from one of three backups (one per iDevice I own), with the one for my iPhone being the one it AUTOMATICALLY took every time I plugged it in POST-upgrade (ie. from just a few minutes ago). What I obviously want is to go back to the backup that was automatically taken just BEFORE the upgrade took place.

Am I missing something? Is it right that every time you plug in a iDevice the backup it automatically takes OVERWRITES the one it took previously?? I thought (hoped!) these were delta backups and therefore I could go back to any point in time (within reason).. just never had need to actually attempt to do this (ie. attempt to pick a backup other than the latest taken).

HELP! :D

(thanks in advance..)

I'm curious about this myself. I am thinking about doing a restore and want to be able to go back to the last backup I did before the backup that took so long last night. I'm thinking that doing it now will be easier because yesterday the servers were so overloaded. I haven't tried it yet so I haven't seen the restore from backup options.

Also, if I do a restore and restore my device to new, can I then go to a backup to add back my stuff? When I restored yesterday I thought I was losing everything. I was happy when it finished and I still had old text messages but I had already synced my photos with iPhoto and removed them from my phone in preparation for the update. In doing that, I freed up like 8 gig, had no clue I had taken that many pics in a year!

Anyway, to reiterate the OP's question and hopefully bump this so someone sees it, does anyone know if every time you back up you are overwriting any other backups on your computer?

To answer my own question: further research does indeed confirm that backups overwrite a single copy, with the exciting of when you restore from backup it duplicates the backup you are restoring from (so as subsequent backups don't overwrite your stake in the ground).

Differing needs vary, makes sense to some and I can see the logic in a way.. just doesn't fit my usage! Oh well..

In iTunes when you right-click on the device and choose "Restore from backup" do you get a selection of choices there. You should have multiple backups ... well I do.
