Bad Memory Slot

I was surfing the internet tonight when my computer crashed. When I tried to turn it back on all I got was the dvd rom noise and nothing on the screen.

I thought maybe it was the ram and took both chips out. Put chip A in the one ram slot with the other chip out. It booted fine. Put chip B in and no boot. Took chip A out and replaced with chip B and it booted fine. Both chips work fine but it seems the one ram slot is screwed up. It just happened out of the blue.

Is this an MBP or a Powerbook?

This used to be one of the more common failure modes on the 15" (particularly, and maybe also 17") Powerbooks. Not that it happened a lot, but when those computes failed, it was frequently this issue. The lower slot, in particular, IIRC. I haven't heard of it that many times on the MBP; I don't know if it is an issue there or not. It was very commonly brought up on the Powerbooks, though.

It sounds like you did a pretty good evaluation. It sounds like this is a hardware issue Apple needs to fix for you.

Is this computer, whatever it is, under warranty?

woops. Sorry I forgot to say this is a macbook. I have had the computer less than 8 months so it is still under warranty. Very sad that it failed already though
