Apple Japan will start their Back to School Promotion starting May.
And, 11" MBA does not qualify for having free ipod touch :(

Maybe I should get 13" instead then >.<

Maybe wait for the impending MBA refresh? As far as upgrades go it would be a solid improvement.

But the current ones are also pretty good.

I have a client who is an executive level in Apple quality control both US & China. After I complain about MBA using C2D processor, he told me that Apple is definitely refreshing their processor mid-year for sure. Well, he also told him how Apple test quality by test drop all their macbook with screen opened 2 feet distance or something......

He told you? He told him? You have a client? Back to school?

Your story does not make sense.

bummer.

i'm curious, what about the white macbook? is it all laptops except the 11?

are the profit margins lower on the airs than on other macbooks? i thought i had read some people saying the opposite. then again, the student discount on the airs is pretty measly, relative to the pros. maybe the margin is smaller.

?

That timing of this supposed back to school sale in Japan is a little strange. The school year in Japan has three semesters, the first of which starts on April 1st and goes until the end of July/early August, after which is the summer break. The second term starts up again in September, so it's strange that they would have a back to school promotion here in May, right in the middle of the first term, before summer vacation and almost four months before the start of the second term.

Do the Japanese and US back to school sales usually have the same rules? I'm planning to get a 11" MBA with the free iPod, so if it doesn't apply it would be a huge disappointment. The next best thing would be a refurbished model for $850, but I don't think they give the option for a discounted printer with that either. It seems like it would almost be a better deal to go with a 13" MBA and a free iPod and printer.

I really hope the free touch deal applies to the 11.6 air as I will be picking one up in mid august for school and would love the discount. Maybe the expected refresh in June will give apple more incentive to include it in the deal. Anyone wanna speculate what the base specs for the 11.6's will be after a refresh? 4 gb ram standard at least hopefully.

Also macmall is doing a sale for base 11's on ebay for $879. Possible sign of clearing out leftovers??

The "back to school promotion" is usually held between the end of may and the beginning of september. Apple "gives" (mail in rebate) a ipod touch witch every mac purchased by a student. If you aren't a student or if you purchased your mac outside these dates... then you can't get the free Ipod...

As for the Thread: Dang it... I'm holding out on buying a 11" air because of this promotion (and to get more info on the refresh).. I hope this is not true... I mean, it's "get a free ipod witch the purchase of a desktop or laptop mac"... The 11" is a laptop!

Like all previous Back To School promotions, it's only at Apple Stores or Educational stores on college campus', you have to be a Student/Faculty (possibly Alumni if it's a campus store). Usually starts in July sometime. In the past, the Mac Mini's were excluded, and a few years ago, the lowest priced MacBook (white 2.0 GHz version) was excluded as well. But the upgraded MacBooks (black ones and higher end white ones) and the Pro's were valid for the promotion. (again, this was a few years ago), it can change from year to year.

not so strange. students just got back to school (first week or so of april). classes have only been in full swing for two weeks, and the sale comes during golden week (long vacation) and lasts until 5/24. the 11" is not included in the deal. the deal is probably available through any mac store in japan because i think it is a rebate system. you buy both, and then you send in paperwork for a rebate of up to 20,000 yen.

the 20,000 rebate only covers the price of an 8gb ipod touch. that is a fine product, but it won't hold a lot of music. it is a 30-40,000 yen price difference between the 11" and 13" models. unless you actually think you will use the ipod touch, this may not be much of a deal for you. you will be paying at least 10,000 yen more than you originally planned for a computer you didn't originally plan to buy and a device that you may not find very useful. you might be able to sell the ipod online, but all of the hassle may not be worth it.

Well that's looking pretty bad. I doubt it will be any different than the Japanese and Australian offers.

I could understand for the Mac mini (229$ iPod + 50$ rebate is a lot for a 699$ computer).

But the MBA 11? It's exactly the same price as the white MacBook (which qualifies) and I bet more people upgrade their MBA (4GB RAM, more SSD and such) getting it more expensive than the MacBook.

Heck, I was going to order a 1399$ MBA 11 ultimate. It's more expensive than the base MBA 13 and MBP 13. I might go with the MBA 13 now, cause the iPod touch is in fact a deal breaker for me. Plus you get 100$ off as a student instead of 50$ on the 11".

The MBA line seems to be the one Apple wants more attention on. I'm really disappointed by this.

lucky for you lol we indoneshit ppl can't buy anything from apple.

if you'd be buying the 13" base w/4GB ram i'd rather spend my monies for a MBP 13" 2011 base.

more value for money

btw, if you're running out of money.

remember that the US accepts a partially broken dollar/money bill (1/2 i believe)

get yourself 200$ and start making some money shred till' you can buy a ultimate macbook air with the core i series)

don't actually do this tho. you may get caught by the cop

interesting idea.

if you're allowed to, say, have the left 26% plus right 26% of a bill count as one dollar, you can easily make $3 from $2.

however, i'm pretty sure the US government is not that stupid. the rule is probably "a continuous 51% portion".

Math problem: Can you cheat that rule? (even if taping/gluing is allowed)

:)

Actually if you look back at last years Japan BTS sale it began on May 25, 2010.
