Bad News/Good News

I have posted about 2 threads about my recent repair, and for all you who have not read them, I will post again and tell you what happened today.

(I have a really crappy camera so it's hard to see the damage)

On August 3rd I shipped my iBook G4 (1.42GHz 14") to Memphis, TN (2nd Repair) to get my mouse fixed because it stopped working.

I got my iBook back on August 5th and noticed that the entire computer had black smugges and sticky stuff all over it as well as screen coming off and the USB/Firewire panel coming off. I called Apple and they said they would have it fixed as soon as possible, and they told me to send it back.

On August 9th I got it back. This time it was worse. Nothing was fixed, but they decided to replace my entire system:

ASSY BOTTOM CASE
I/O Bezel Assy
PCBA MLB 1.42GHZ, 512 SAM
SUBASSY AP EXT/BT 11CHNL W
PCBA MLB 1.42GHZ 512MB S

Now when I read this it made be think: I checked everything and it had no problems. They told me my 3rd party Kingstom 1GB was the cause of this. Odd isn't it.

Ontop of that, there were even worse black marks, the top of my computer was basically destroyed.

I called AppleCare and talked to many people for about 2 hours before I talked to a fellow named Greg Calhoun. He said that they would replace it with a brand new MacBook free of charge. Now, this is great and I am very pleased, but he did not say what model they would replace it with. Does anybody know?? I spent over $1299 on this computer so I would expect something in the price range.

I would say whichever one you got, for example, if yours was the higher end processor they would send you the 2.16GHz and if it was the slower processor they would send you the 2.0GHz. This is what happened with my ipod photo which was replaced with a 5.5G ipod. I had the 30GB and they sent me the 30GB, however, if I had a 20GB one they would still send me the 30GB, I'm sure you get the idea and I'm sorry to ramble.

That makes little sense: I buy the top line in 2005 and they replace it with a computer that is the low end?? I mean the 2.0GHz doesnt have a SD (the old ones do though).

I'd be very clear about what your minimum requirements are for a replacement. But let's face it; *any* MacBook you get now is technically a step-up. Given all the replacement hassle that's come your way I'd be very clear with those handling the replacement you won't accept going from a SD to a CD. Just as if you had a 17" powerbook you shouldn't accept a 15" MacBook Pro, even if technically its faster/newer/etc.

I think you meant the reverse.

I think you'll get the 2.16ghz white MacBook. Definitely not the 2.0 since that comes with combo drive.

Why not sell it when you get it, unopened, new in box, and get the MBP with Tiger... then upgrade to Leopard in two months? I'd bet cracking that seal will devalue the MacBook more than the upgrade price of Leopard.

What are people's thoughts on this?

I was also thinking about asking them if I payed the difference, could I get a MBP, but I want to wait until Leopard and maybe a new MBP would come out. Yes I am aware that MBP were just updated but with all the talk about Penryn, I think I can wait. I can live with a MB even though I hate that damn Glossy crap. I looked on eBay at the current price of a new/lightly used MB 2.16GHz and its about 1000-1150. Good for me because if I were to sell my iBook, I would only get about $800.

I am very happy. They were going to try to fix my iBook again and I said, "Do you think its fair that I have not had a computer for over 1 week?? I have stuff to do and I run a home based business, everyday I don't have a computer, I am loosing business."

Still waiting for Apple to send me some emails..
