Good morning
I have a open core Mac Pro 5,1 running Big Sur on a nvme, and windows 10 on a SSD. Well I was having strange issues so I decided to wipe the Big Sur drive using a usb drive that had El Capitan. For some reason it’s telling me that the usb drive install is corrupt. Any ideas how I could make a usb installer and maybe get something like Mojave installed, seemed like I had less issues with that OS. I do have a MacBook Pro If need be to create a bootable usb. I’m just wondering if the open core is going to cause issues.

There is a good chance your El Capitan disk is too old and the certificate is out of date. Download a new installer and recreate the install USB and try that.

I went ahead and made a Mojave install USB and everything went smoothly, computer is back online. I am however having an issue with opencore not displaying my windows hard drive on the boot selection screen.

Opencore can only boot a UEFI Windows install - did you do a UEFI install of Windows 10?

I honestly can’t remember. Well I don’t mind wiping that drive and starting from new. Is there a easy way of installing windows 10? Is a virtual machine install pretty reliable, and would it create a uefi install?

Avoid uefi windows without open core protection.

it can harm your boot rom with certificates.

make a firmware dump before, seriously.

or you need someone like me or Tsialex to clean your firmware to remove the certs.

I recently did a firmware dump and saved it just to be safe.
Is it safer to install windows 10 using a DVD ROM? I heard that is a legacy install.

Yes, but if you use the boot picker do not select EFI.

DVD is (apart of virtualisation with real disc and a virtual dvd image) the only way to install a legacy Windows on the Mac Pro.

Windows USB Stick just booted once gives the first certificate. Even if it does not begin the installation proces.

May someone provide a guide on how to install windows 10 with a dvd? I'm currently on Mojave. I burned the ISO of windows 10 to the dvd using finder (right click "burn disk image").

I burned the windows 10 iso to a dual layer dvd. They pressed the c button to boot into the cd but that didn’t work. All I saw was a black screen with blinking cursor.

I was curious how exactly do you clean the firmware?

this is something a end user shouldnt do, there are checksums to build and if something gets wrong the Mac wouldnt start no more and you will have a brick.

for the end user it means to make a firmware dump and send it to someone who can do it and flash it back.

I have Win 10 installed on a spare spinner HDD - I installed from a DVD probably almost two years ago . . . . I recall having the 'blinking cursor' problem but at that time I was called away from the cMP . . . when I returned about 5 ~8 mins later to the cMP the install had finally started and the installation was successful.

So, it may be worth trying again but if and when the 'blinking cursor' pops ip . . .let it do it's thing, go for walk, have a coffee somewhere . . hopefully when you return everything will be ready to go.

Good Luck but no promises.
