With all of this new real estate I've been finding it a little difficult to keep a grasp on which screen all of my random apps exist. Thus, I've been using the "Search Page" a lot more often than I used it on my iPhone.

Well, I’m not sure about you but I absolutely HATE that blank waste of space screen that appears ??before the homepage?? – How much more functional would it be if we could trigger the search function by either double tapping/holding the home button to make this search field appear on any screen? Anyway, I’ve done a quick mock up to show what my fanciful dream would look like.

PS…It would be nice if this could search the web as well. Just dreaming big here people :-/

The universal search in my palm pre does exactly what you are describing including the bit about searching the web.. And all you need to do to trigger it is to start typing while viewing the home screen..

Not a troll...love love looove my iPad... Respect iPhones... But palms webos seems to leaps and bounds ahead of iphone os in certain aspects including REAL multitasking, multitouch gestures, and universal search.. It even seems to be ahead of what is promised in 4.0.. It's just too bad their hardware is *****... And their marketing is super *****

Now that hp purchased them, their future phones and tablets will definitely be keeping apple sharp and on it's game... Either way, the consumer wins (unless you r a fanboy)

The home screen on the iPad is garbage. Apple completely mailed it in on the design. It needs to be alot more customizable. Notifications, emails, appointments, etc. Universal search is also a much needed feature.

This and more and be accomplished through JailBreak on the iPhone. Not everything is working (yet) on the iPad. Go to Cydia and check out:
Universal Search -- truly universal search on the search page, including internet
InfoLock -- events, new messages, etc. on lockscreen
iSmartDialer -- use T9 to enter contact
... and much more!

I hate the search and wish I could disable it. I never use it but accidentally bring up the search screen often.

searching: iPad_user_guide.pdf on page 21

Yes, like on iPhone, the iPad os allows the same entry:

not sure if this helps make it more manageable or if this is what you have been doing, but you can double tap the home button to get to the search field faster than swiping all the way to it

The ipad OS was a damn rush job. The new screen resolution threw a huge design monkey wrench into apple's design team. All that real estate wasted and that's why you have snobby remarks about the iPad being a huge iPhone/iPod touch.

The iPad also had to run iPhone/iPod touch apps (be backwards compatible) - so there goes your advantages of a new UI out the window.

Err ... Actually you can.

Settings. > general. >. Home

That changes the behavior of the home double-click, it doesn't disable the search.

If you click the home button when you are on the primary home screen, search comes up. If you swipe to the right on the same screen, search comes up. Annoying IMO, sometimes you go to tap an app icon and your finger slides slightly which causes the screen to scroll (sometimes to search). I personally have no use for the search function.

iPhone (and iPad) OS4 will bring improved Global Search (Universal Search) including Web and Wikipedia search.

From Gizmodo:

Web and Wikipedia Search
Can't find what you need on the phone? Jump to the Web or Wikipedia straight from the global search screen.

I agree with one of the other posters that this is implemented very well in WebOS.

What (I don't think so anyway) it won't bring to iPhone/iPad is in-app search, (you can't search for a Tweet in Twitterific).

So, most of what you want is coming!
