Balance of speakers changing automatically

Hey, I'm on a new PB G4 and I have one problem with it. Occasionally, meaning probably once a weeks I'll be listening to music and realize that my sound is only really coming out of one speaker or the other. And when I go into system preferenses to check on the sound, the balance has been shifted automatically. Does anyone have any idea why this happens or if there is some way I can fix it?

That bug's been there for a while, I sure wish that Apple would fix it. Meanwhile, balanced is an okay workaround.

Thanks a lot! This really helped and as far as I can see, the problem is "fixed". One unfortunate thing about having a Mac is the fact that there they are so used to not having problems that they don't have very good help.
