Really hope ability to read barcodes (UPS 10&13, QR, DataMatrix) are included soon.

Starting to read barcodes for more reasons other then to get price (RedLaser)

Not sure I understand since there are 100's of barcode reader Apps.: For instance NeoReader reads all the codes (and more) you list for free. What is there to add?

Yes I would also like the camera to work everywhere like a Video dictation key.

Trouble there is how do you figure out what to do with the data and in what context.

I think you will have to stick with apps in the meantime instead of hoping for iOS 6 to sort it all out for you.

Instead of finding and launching a barcode app, wait to load, hit a scan button,

want to see in Lockscreen a barcode reader button next to camera button. One touch start of reader.

Another lock screen add-on for a barcode reader just seems ridiculous. I realize some people would like the functionality, but why clutter up the screen with something virtually nobody wants/needs?

I think what would be better than a limited market feature like a barcode scanner on the lock screen, would be a customizable launch option so you can launch any one app from the lock screen. There are jailbreak tweaks to do this, and android has it. makes sense to me.

Barcode reader functionality is nice
But I would guess that most users, like myself, only use it sporadically and on very limited occasions
Not something that needs to be incorporated into the OS and the Lockscreen IMO
Current free apps do the job very well, and the time it takes to start and app etc is a small price to pay to keep the screen free of rarely used clutter

I would LOVE a barcode reader that actually finds items in relevant stores.

Example: I am shopping at target and find a bluray movie for $10. I would like to scan said item;s barcode and have an app check stores like walmart, best buy, etc. so that if it is cheaper elsewhere I can get it pricematched. Perhaps this is already a reality (in which case please point me there) but I have only found barcode readers finding the product on random websites, the only one of which that is usually recognizable being Amazon. Don't get me wrong, an Amazon search is great (if it's significantly cheaper on Amazon I will just order it there), but it would be nice to find local listings for price matching reasons.

i don't do it much, but i usually use red laser. IIRC it will point me to like Target and Walmart for comparison purposes as well as online retailers.

Really? On the lock screen is a bit ridiculous. It takes me 3 seconds to use spotlight to find my barcode app and launch it. I work on barcode scanners for a living and have for the past 15 years, I have more of a use for it than most. The percentage of people that would need that feature is probably much less than 1%.

The increasing prevalence of QR Codes and alternatives (TAG), not to mention the common UPC, in the US makes if more and more important.

In Japan, everything has a QR tag, reading the codes are a core feature in Japan. I think Europe is also rapidly heading that way too.

barcode reader

HI......have gone through all of your perceptions regarding barcode reader functionality with Android application that intrinsically read QR code with RFID technology............hope soon there be lots more new updates...

I have the shop savvy reader, but have got into grief using it in the UK..Okay, I know it annoys shopkeepers, but I have it on my iPhone, and if making an impulse purchase for something big, I use it.

I was told by the electronics section head in a large UK retail outlet recently that..." You are not allowed to use that here" What? Walked out, and didn't buy...Crazy thing is their price was the best anyway.!

I can't see any point in Apple integrating it..There are so many available, and if it's on your desktop it's just two taps...Not exactly taxing..:D

Yea, echoing. 1D/2D barcode reader from lockscreen would be hot.

I see one in the wild, pull out phone, unlock, search in brain for what the icon looks like, hunt around for the folder it's hidden in. Sucks. They aren't currently convenient.

I am REALLY hoping for integrated bar code reader now.

Every time I go somewhere, here I scan something, be it UPC, information QR, MS TAG (Lowe's), and USPS/UPS/FedEx barcode/matrix code.

Better way then first suggestion is in LOCK screen use camera button to start camera, once active a small UPC like icon to tap and start scan.
While camera might be smart enough to recognize a BC, I can image a few instances where it might be confused, OR someone wants to take a picture of the barcode and not read it (send as pic?)
Info displayed is simple, perhaps just last 10 scans, or link to appropriate app?

This is FAR simpler and faster then finding, starting, and waiting for app to load. Takes almost 6 seconds to get RL going, while iPhone camera is ready in about 2 seconds.
