Barcode software?

I'm looking to purchase barcode software, particularly software geared towards generating codes for publishing (e.g. ISBN etc.)

I wondered if anyone had any guidance or recommendations on this kind of thing? Any issues to bear in mind?

I use BarCodeX. It generates all the usual suspects including ISBN, plus loads of specialist retail codes. see:

RE: barcode software

There is also barcode pro (http://www.hallogram.com/barcodes/bcpro/) but this program costs more than the other recommendation. I used the older version of this that ran under OS 9 / Classic and it has almost every option of barcode generation under the sun, but may be overkill if you need to JUST generate ISBN and maybe a couple other types of barcodes.

Either way, at least you can check them both out, compare features and decide for yourself.

I second barcode pro, unsure of the cost, just use it at work, very simple to use.

I don’t use it personally, but one of my colleagues is rather chuffed with Barcode Producer. It's a Universal Binary and an exchange rate-tastic $149. Saves your codes as EPS files too which is well handy.

No help, but....

...the image always amuses me:

At the supermarket check-out and one item won't scan through the till, so the assistant shouts across to the manager.
"What's the barcode?" the manager asks, and the assistant replies;
"Thin one, fat one, thin one, thin one, fat one..."

In other news, the Nokia e90 has barcode reading software built-in you can use with it's 3.2Mp camera, try doing that with a iPhone.

I've also used Barcode Pro, although it's been a couple of years, so I can't compare it to the other offerings very well. What I liked is that it was exceedingly simple to use, yet provided support for a wide range of bar codes.

I also liked that you generate an image file, vs. using some sort of bar code font, which to me seems like asking for trouble.

I don't think there are a lot of issues/gotchas with this type of software. Unless you're printing flexographic and need to do scale factors for the barcodes, which BCP did.

Tally one more in the BarCodePro column .... There are also some barcode fonts out there that work well, but you have to figure out how to input the data correctly to get the code you want, etc.

In my experience, BCP is something that may have a bunch of stuff you don't use right now, but before long, you will be.
