It probably just needs further driver tuning. The extra ram may help in some computation use, however the heaviest use cases seem to be stuck with CUDA for the moment.
 
I love that there is finally a 3GB GPU option for OSX, i wish there was a 4 or 6, but give us a new mac to put it in! The current architecture of the mac pro and its OS ham string the cards performance. (PCI 2.1, Opengl 3.2, The DDR5 ram is probably bottle-necked by the bus speed of all but the latest MP's among other things) - diminishing returns probably sticking it in 2008 mp, though it likely would work in a 1,1 2,1 and 3,1 MP.
 
I have just upgraded from 5770 to 5870, heavy Final Cut user, no any visible improvements with the 5870 so far. Very disappointing, even if I didn't expect miracles ! If no clear improvements between the 7950 and the 5870, then the 5770 is still a very good solution !
